Home Farm, Combermere, Whitchurch, Shropshire, SY13 4AL

Produce: Welsh Wagyu Beef, Mangalitza Pork, Patridge, Rabbit, Phesant, Ostrich, Kangaroo, Crocodile and more….

Ifor feeds his lucky cattle 4 pints of ale a day, from wonderful local Monty’s Brewery........the marbling of the meat is now grade 6, which is the same as imported Japanese Wagyu.

The dynamic duo, Jeannie & Rachel, have built up a high quality business over 16 years, bringing exciting, delicious and increasingly different meats to homes and restaurants across the UK. ‘Alternative Meats’ name has become synonymous with quality and they have supplied many celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Heston Blumenthal, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, Sat Baines and Tom Aikens, as well as Selfridges meat counter for two years, and Harrods.

Their flagship product is ‘Welsh Wagyu’, which is bred and reared by Ifor Humphreys on his family farm in the rolling green hills of Montgomeryshire, Wales. Wagyu is a Japanese breed of cattle genetically predisposed to intense marbling and to producing a high percentage of omega 3 and 6 fats. The meat from Wagyu is renowned around the world for its quality, and practises in Japan such as massaging the cattle and feeding them beer, is believed to further improve the meat!

I am not sure about the massaging, but it is true that Ifor feeds his lucky cattle 4 pints of ale a day, from wonderful local Monty’s Brewery!

The highly marbled Wagyu beef is scored on a scale of 1 – 9 for this attribute. When Ifor first started selling his Welsh Wagyu to Jeannie and Rachel before 2000, the beef was grade 3 or 4. Butcher Rachel, worked hard with Ifor to improve the intensity of the marbling and now it is grade 6, which is the same as imported Japanese Wagyu. It must be Monty’s beer!

Mangalitza Pork is another example of the exciting and different meats sold by Jeannie and Rachel and demanded by their restaurants and online customers alike. Mangalitza Pigs are a Hungarian breed of pig, famous for their long curly hair and their ruby red, highly marbled meat (Jeannie tells us it is the pork equivalent of Wagyu!). Lisa and Tim Otterburn in Helmsley, North Yorkshire produce delicious, tender, succulent Mangalitza pork from their pedigree pigs who live a long and happy life in wonderful surroundings.

Provenance is very important to Jeannie and Rachel, so they work with fine producers, sourcing from the British Isles where possible. Their more exotic range, which includes crocodile, zebra, kangaroo (to name but a few), come from the best sources in Africa and Australia.

Jeannie & Rachel are excitingly different “ladies in the male orientated meat world”, their customers are food adventurers, who become members of an excitingly different food club!
